What Would Jesus Buy?

Just as an add-on to the anti-consumer plan I proposed a a few days ago; this time giving a little comedic religious perspective on the consumerist evil that is taking over many lives.
I was reading this interesting article entitled, “What Would Jesus Buy?” on The Washington Post website and I had to share. Evidently, Rev. Billy, a performance artist, has taken on his Christian alter ego in an effort to spread the gospel of anti-consumerism with his “Stop Shopping Gospel Choir.” The film’s makers are having a hard time finding a distributor for their film due to its obvious anti-shopping agenda even with executive producer Morgan Spurlock, creator of the eye-opening documentary titled Super Size Me, supporting its efforts.
Rev. Billy (Billy Talen of New York) likens the corporate clutch on our wallets to the control the Roman Catholic church had in the 1300s. Thank Buddha for Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation for that one; arguably rebelling against the Catholic’s form of consumerism: paying for forgiveness. Although this religious nonshopping train is promoting an important message, they adamantly do not advertise wares to sell, such as shirts, but they do have a book or two about the anti-consumer message.
However you look at our capitalist culture, many of us have never felt that urge to keep up appearances so much so that the items we buy become our identity. So if this documentary sheds some light on the positive notion that we do not need things to live a peaceful and balanced life, then this documentary is serving an awesome purpose in my book. Can I get an Amen?!
