Can Live Earth 7-7-07 Save the World?

In honor of the Live Earth concerts today I thought I would post some of the information because environmental causes have always been something I care about. My husband and I are that couple in line ahead of you at the grocery store, pet store, and even Target with our cloth bags and earth friendly products. Even my lucky cats get to eat organic because who wants all those pesticides?!
The website said that… “Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore joined Live Earthers in London and Hamburg live via satellite from a special event on the capitol lawn in Washington D.C., where he asked his globe-spanning audience to join him in signing the Live Earth 7-Point Pledge. Al Gore quoted an old African proverb: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together…Well, we need to go far, quickly.’ Gore was framed by a view of the Capitol building at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and stood before an at-capacity, overflowing crowd who turned out to see Gore despite stifling heat and a last-minute announcement.”
I must admit, if I had known Gore was going to be at the spontaneous DC event, I would have definitely jumped on the metro and headed there today. I did catch most of the concerts between watching them on tv and listening on my XM radio when I was out and about today and I was pleasantly surprised. I love the whole idea of this concert to raise awareness of the trouble our environment is in, but I never know how to feel about these celebrity-type events. I mean, Kanye West cares about the environment? The Pussycat Dolls or whatever their crappy band name is cares about the environment? Really? No, really? I mean, aren’t they all about driving around gaz-guzzling Hhummers and wearing expensive clothes made by poor people? Okay, so maybe I am supposed to just happy that they showed up, but I’m not. I mean, Enrique Iglesias had a shirt on that read Indianapolis 500! Um, let’s support a huge race where cars drive in circles for hours and push lots of junk in the air. The environment is not some fad to jump on for advertisement and I don’t think they’ve earned their green stripes yet, but we’ll wait and see.
As for the music, I caught a few minutes of The Police performance and they were awesome; not too mention Sting (and his wife) has long been a green supporter who started the Rainforest Foundation and is also a huge yoga fan. I love that Chris Rock came out and introduced Red Hot Chili Peppers. There were also some great films containing eco tips between all of the performances. There’s this one that shows the Rainforest in Bolivia from a satellite view in 1975 to 2003 and the change is so upsetting. You see this beautiful lush space go white because all of the foliage has been cut down for development.
So all in all this concert is a good thing and I ask everyone out there to visit the website and Answer the Call. Let’s all leave a smaller footprint and help change the world!
