Senate Republicans will Filibuster Anything

Okay, so my first thought for a title was Senate Republicans Hate Black People a la Kanye West and his comment about Bush hating Black people because of his inadequate support for them following Katrina. Kanye seems to get all bitchy if he thinks people are copying him though so I came up with my own because I am confident that Kanye reads my blog and I didn’t want him to compare me to 50 cent or anything.
Moving on…
A bill that would have given DC residents their first-ever member of Congress died in the Senate on Tuesday, killing all hope for DC residents who were eager to have full voting rights after waiting for 206 years.
Although the majority Senate voted 57-42, it failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome the Republican filibuster. The bill would have created two new House seats: one for the DC (which has about 600,000 people) and one for Utah.
So what does this mean? Well, the first thing I wonder is why Senate Republicans would vote against this measure. Many argue that perhaps DCs predominantly Black population is the reason this bill did not pass and this is another example of racism still prevalent in our country. I won’t discount that, but I will say that my inclination is to assume that if DC becomes a state, many of the politicians that work and play in DC, even though they all claim to hate this political city, may be susceptible to laws they break or have already broken. Also, this blue city was rejected their rights because the Republicans know that the representatives would be Democrats and they’d rather “win” that ensure that everyone has a say in our democracy. I wonder how quickly the Republicans would act if DC citizens refused to pay taxes until they receive representation. How can we possibly bring democracy to Iraq if we can’t even bring it to our own country?
