It’s Official, You are What You Eat

Evidently, after five years of reviewing thousands of medical studies, scientists have concluded that most cancers ARE directly related to what you eat and your weight. This may not seem like big news to many, but I think it’s monumental. This information is very similar to knowing that cigarettes can cause cancer, yet smoking anyway. Another reason this may come as a surprise to many is that we, Americans, are constantly bombarded with commercials and advertisements about food, and it’s hard for some to grasp that just because it can be marketed, does not mean that it should be consumed. It’s no coincidence that a burger commercial is the reason you decide you must have one days later. These messages all rest in our brains and cause that tug-of-war many of us have with food and health. So although this post may not seem like news to some, it’s important to have this dialogue so everyone can begin to realize the ramifications of a poor diet and lack of exercise.
A few of my own thoughts…
- Consider eating a diet with little to no meat, especially red meat.
- When at the grocery store, always shop the perimeter first. Have you ever noticed that most grocery stores are organized to have all the fresh foods (veggies, fruits, deli, bakery) around the edges of the store?
- Do a little “waist management” with Dr. Oz. I recently purchased the book and will be highlighting some items I find later.
- Be physically active for 30 minutes a day.
- Never drink your calories with sugary drinks like soda. If you are a juice fan, add some water to lighten the sugar load.
