Charity Suggestions for the Holidays?

Posted on November 19, 2007 - Filed Under Charitable Causes |

So many of you that read my blog know that I have been going strong this year with my anti-consumerism plan and now with the holidays coming, I am looking for one charity, possibly two, that my husband and I can donate to for the upcoming holidays. In lieu of any gift that our families might give us, we are requesting that they contribute to our selected charities. Does anyone out there have any charity suggestions? I generally contribute to the Humane Society of Fairfax County, So Others Might Eat, and Vietnam Veterans of America throughout the year, but am open to new charitable causes. So if you have one that is close to your heart, please drop me a comment and let me know.

How about the Prostate Cancer Foundation? My friends and I are participating in Movember this year, growing mustaches and raising money to fight ass cancer.

    You can donate here.

That is fantastic…it’s like talk like a pirate day but for cancer, and for an entire month. This might also explain why everyone’s been walking around looking like Jason Lee.

May I suggest Center for a New American Dream (www.newdream.org)? They are all about anti-consumerism.

I also donated for the first time this year to the Central Asia Institute (http://www.ikat.org/)after reading the book “Three Cups of Tea. One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time”

    You’ve noticed that, too?

Hey Michelle - thanks for the suggestion. I’ve been a fan of the New American Dream ever since you turned me on to them last year, thanks! I’ll check out your ikat.org suggestion: I saw a special on the Three Cups of Tea guy and thought that was great.

For obvious reasons, the American Cancer Society is dear to my heart. Not only does the money go to a possible cure but also takes care of those with cancer and their families by providing support in so many ways - lodging at cancer facilities, social support, financial support, etc.

I like heifer project - gives stock animals to families in need. The deal is that the first set of offspring goes to another family in the same village so that more families can prosper. the project provides training on raising and breeding the animals in a sustainable manner. once the obligation to the project is discharged, the family can sell the offspring to better their lives. They can also sell whatever surplus the animals produce - milk, eggs, cheese, honey, etc. http://www.heifer.org

This site is dedicated to supporting public schools and projects for public schools. The recipient can choose a project from the site. You can search projects by state or by various other keywords.

Finally was able to check the heifer.org and donorschoose.org site and these are fantastic! What an easy way to immediately make a difference! The American Cancer Society has one of the easiest donor pages I’ve seen. I like that you can make a donation in honor of someone.
