Local Tea Company Honestly Cares About Environment

Posted on November 27, 2007 - Filed Under Health, Mother Nature, Food, VA/DC/MD Happenings |

I remember the first time I had an Honest Tea; it was First Nation Peppermint and it was perfect. I really love iced tea, and having hailed from Illinois where the tea can still run southern sweet, it was the perfect drink.  According to BevNet’s website,  “Each Honest Tea flavor is brewed based on a recipe perfected over generations in a specific region of the world. As a result, a drink of Honest Tea becomes a cultural experience, from the genuine tastes to the distinctive international art and quotations on the labels.” Sticking to this unique concept, I found out that my favorite First Nation Peppermint is based on a Crow Indian recipe.

My husband and I never leave Whole Foods without grabbing a variety of Honest Teas to get us through the week. As someone that carries a reusable water bottle around everywhere, I have grown more concerned about the packaging waste when I buy single-serve drinks. So in a recent Washington Post article, it was refreshing to hear that Honest Tea’s chief executive and co-founder (Seth Goldman) is constantly thinking of ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. After the teas are brewed, the leaves are turned into mulch, and here in Virginia, cows will soon be fed the tea leaves (minty cow breath?). When the company realized the aluminum in their new juice packet drinks prevent the product packaging from being recycled, they decided to collect the used packages and create school-supply pouches.

This company not only makes a great drink, but they have subscribed to the school of thought that companies can be good for the environment, do good for the environment, and still be profitable.

Mmmm, I loves me some Honest Tea! Once, years ago, a grocery store in Champaign, IL, where I was visiting a friend, had an error in their database that had Honest Tea on sale four for a dollar! Needless to say, I bought out just about their entire selection, then went back almost daily till they fixed the problem and it went back to the normal price. ;-)
