Organic Food Just Tastes Better

Eating organic food can have nutritional benefits far superior than food made through factory farming, which treats food as a commodity and animals as “tools of production.” Buying organic food not only ensures that animals are treated more humanely, but it also limits the amount of pesticides consumed. Many studies have determined that organic farming is also better for the environment because no pesticides or antibiotics are used, thus maintaining the delicate ecosystem balance on the farm.
USDA regulations state that food certified as organic must be produced without most synthetic pesticides and fertilizers while antibiotics, hormones, and feed made from animal parts are also banned. According to Grinning Planet, data compiled by the US Department of Agriculture reveal that since the 1940s the mineral levels in fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy have declined substantially in conventional foods. Combine this with earlier (pre-ripened) picking, longer storage, and more processing of crops, and it’s not surprising that we may be getting fewer nutrients in our food than we were 60 years ago.
Dr. Green, author of Raising Baby Green, has a top 10 list of what foods are a must when buying organic. So if you simply cannot buy everything organic, here’s the list that is a must:
- Milk
- Potatoes
- Peanut Butter
- Baby Foods
- Catsup
- Cotton (oil from the seeds)
- Apples
- Beef
- Soy
- Corn
Anyone that has ever tasted a locally grown organic tomato from their community knows why organic is better, not only for health but for taste too. So shop the 10 list and green your health.
