The 100-Mile Diet

The 100-mile diet, based on a US and Canadian book, is the story of truly eating locally for one year. According to 100milediet.org, “when the average North American sits down to eat, each ingredient has typically travelled at least 1,500 miles—call it ‘the SUV diet.’” The creators figure that a “100-mile radius is large enough to reach beyond a big city and small enough to feel truly local.” I feel a bit spoiled because Whole Foods takes the guesswork out of knowing what food you are buying is local, but I’ll take the help where I can get it. So reduce your global footprint and eat locally; you’ll feel great eating all the local fresh ingredients and your local farmer will thank you for the business.
