How To Report Phishing and Spam

Posted on August 2, 2008 - Filed Under Techie, How To... |

Everyone receives spam in their email account at one point or another, and while most of us mark the email as spam and move on, there is another step that we can take to stop these pests: reporting the fraudulent emails.

First, report the spam to the organization the spam is imitating. Most organizations have a “report fraud emails” link.
Second, report the spam to the government by forwarding the spam to the FTC at UCE@FTC.gov.
Third, report the spam to the domain name used to send the spam.
Fourth, address any other concerns directly to the organization such as if you purchased something from someone using PayPal and it turned out to be a scam and you never received your item or service.

Spam Links has an exhaustive list of addresses you can use to report all of kinds of spam, even when it’s from other countries. When reporting the spam, be sure to send your fraud report from the offending email using the “Forward as attachment” option. Type “FRAUD REPORT” in the subject line and email to the proper reporting address.
